"In memory of sisters before" - Sterling Silver Broomstick pendant

A sterling silver Besom to quickly purify your space, your energy and to tuck under your pillow to ward off bad dreams and aid restful sleep. At least that is what modern paganism says about the “traditional” broom (besom).

My darkest heart would like to step back another 400 years or so, to the 15th century where our ancestors discovered a hallucinogenic concoction of Belladonna, black Henbane, Mandrake and Jimsonweed. Unfortunately when ingested it caused nausea, vomiting and skin irritation but once absorbed through the receptive sweat glands of the arm pits or mucus membranes of the genitals by way of an ointment the unsavoury side effects vanished, and so was born “witches brew”, and what better applicator than a wooden staff.

Jordanes de Bergamo, a Medieval writer who studied witches’ behaviour  wrote in the 15th century “The vulgar believe, and the witches confess, that on certain days or nights they anoint a staff and ride on it to the appointed place or anoint themselves under the arms and in other hairy places”. So it appears that our wild witchy sisters used their ointment laced broomsticks to “fly”, whether in their dwellings or collectively leaping through the fields to entice the crops to grow.

Whichever era you prefer tales from I find them truly inspirational, so behold my modern day witches… my sterling silver broom - in memory of our sisters before.

Hand forged sterling silver broomstick pendant, I used a cast twig from the magical Sherwood forest as the handle and hand made each of the bristles and bound and soldered them for all eternity.
